Description

This plant can grow up to 1.5 m tall. It has ovate leaves with serrate margin and arranged in opposite pairs. The stem of O. stamineus is quadrangular, erect and reddish-colour. The fruit is an ovoid to oblong nutlet (Medicinal Herbs & Plant Database 2010–2015).

Usage

Misai kucing is known for its diuretic effect (Burkill 1966). Its leaves were introduced to Europe and Japan as a health tea (Ameer et al. 2012). It has been used extensively to treat rheumatoid disease, diabetes, hypertension, influenza, hepatitis and jaundice (Eisai 1995).
